The Progress & Peril of Black Homesteads
In the 1900's, black homesteads dotted the Great Plains. Black families escaping the oppressive South established small farms and ranches on land acquired through the Homestead Act. Despite facing discrimination and harsh conditions, they cultivated the land and built resilient communities.
For most towns of the era, the prospect of a railroad represented progress promising economic growth and increased connectivity. However, for Black homesteads, it was a looming threat bringing the risk of displacement and loss of autonomy. The influx of outsiders and opportunists often led to the erosion of hard-won communities and the seizure of valuable land and resources.
The World: both Beautiful and Menacing
In the world of Brooks Town, green fields stretch to the horizon. And Black cowboys ride against the backdrop of Oklahoma’s red dirt plains. The audience will be transported to a time when the frontier was raw, untouched, and unyielding. A time when random acts of violence were a part of life, with sudden gunfights and blazing fires looming in the darkness. Out of that darkness will emerge tales of courage & redemption, forged…
